Year 3 German Lantern Festival

"Laterne, Laterne, Sonne Mond und Sterne"

Last Tuesday, our Year 3 students—together with students from German-speaking backgrounds and their families—celebrated our wonderful Lantern Festival (Laternenumzug). This German tradition—which highlights the values of kindness, community, and sharing—has become a much-loved annual event at our school that many Junior Primary students look forward to until they finally reach Year 3.

The students shared the story of St Martin and its message of generosity and compassion. A special highlight was their performance of the traditional German song “Laterne, Laterne", with some students proudly playing the melody on their recorders.

Families then gathered with the beautiful handmade lanterns the students had created during their Art lessons. As the lanterns lit up the evening, everyone enjoyed a festive walk around the oval while Ms Bartlett and Chloe (3EN) enthusiastically led a cheerful “train” of students, families and staff singing along.

After the walk, the students shared a big pretzel with their families, and everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a warm Kinderpunsch. With glowing lanterns, music, laughter and a strong sense of community, the evening was a memorable celebration for everyone involved and a wonderful way to bring our school community together.
